Sprint Planning with Scrum for Team System

The bulk of new Sprint Tasks will be generated while Sprint Planning at the beginning of each Sprint. The recommended approach for adding Sprint tasks is to use Team Explorer while Sprint Planning rather than Excel. The alternative approach is to enter all the Sprint Backlog tasks into Excel and then publish them to TFS. While this option does a great job of creating the tasks it leaves out the important linkage to the parent Product Backlog items which then need to be manually linked which is a time consuming process.

Steps to enter Sprint Tasks while Sprint Planning:

Step 1

Run a query that will provide a list of all the Product Backlog items that will be involved with planning – this can be accomplished by either sorting an All Product backlog Items query or a customised query that lists just the Product Backlog Items planned for the current Sprint.

Step 2

As the team breaks each prioritised Product Backlog task into the Sprint Tasks required to deliver it, right-click on the Product Backlog task and select Add a Related Work Item and then Sprint Backlog Item

This will bring up a new Sprint Backlog task that is automatically linked to its parent Product Backlog task.

Step 3

Fill in just the details you know at this stage, i.e. it doesn’t need to be assigned to a team member yet.

Repeat for each Sprint Backlog task
